CPSC releases warning after Samsung top-loading washing machines explode

On the morning of April 8, 2016, 32-year-old Georgia resident Melissa Thaxton said she was unloading some of her clothes from her Samsung top-loading washing machine when it exploded. “There were wires, nuts, the cover actually was laying on the floor.”

What was more disturbing about the whole thing was that her four-year-old son, Luke, had been playing nearby the running machine when the explosion happened. “I just remember covering my head and leaning towards my son and just screaming this scream that I didn’t even know I could scream.”

Thaxton and other plaintiffs filed a lawsuit against Samsung in federal court in New Jersey. Jason Lichtman, the plaintiffs’ legal counsel, said a support rod in the washing machine cannot hold the tub in place and can come unfastened during the spin cycle. Lichtman noted, “The rod can slide right out. And that’s what causes the washing machine to blow apart.”

With this development, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a warning on Wednesday, September 28 regarding the washing machine units, which were manufactured by Samsung between March 2011 and April 2016.
