Greenfield Construction Worker Killed In Building Collapse

January 23, 2012

One construction worker was killed and another injured on-the-job today in Greenfield, Tennessee, after the building the two men were working in collapsed. According to reports from WMCTV 5 News, the accident happened at around 9:30 this morning on Front Street.

Greenfield City Fire Chief Bob Dudley said that the pair of men were working in a lot adjacent to the building when it collapsed. The workers were buried by falling debris and suffered numerous injuries as a result. One of the victims was taken to The Med in Memphis, Tennessee, to be treated for the injuries he sustained. The other man, a 32-year-old man from Greenfield, was killed in the accident. Rescuers said it would take several hours to free the body from the fallen debris.

Dudley said that he believes the high winds from last night associated with a passing storm may have played a part in the building collapsing.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the construction industry is the most dangerous job in in the United States today. They estimate that in the U.S., approximately 751 workers lost their lives during on-the-job accidents last year alone.

The Memphis wrongful death attorneys with John Michael Bailey Injury Lawyers would like to remind all construction workers that employers have a responsibility to provide all employees with a safe work environment. If they do not, they may be able to be held liable for any injuries or deaths that occur.
