Second person dies from salmonella-tainted cucumbers

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Health Services spokeswoman Carrier Williams announced on September 9th that there has been a second fatality recorded due to salmonella-tainted cucumbers.

The victim, identified as a Texas woman, died in late August. The woman reportedly suffered from other health problems.

This death followed the death of a 99-year-old San Diego, California woman, who lost her life to salmonella that she obtained from cucumbers on Aug. 17, 2015.

The CDC also noted that there had already been 341 reported cases of salmonella in 30 states starting July 3, 2015, with the numbers significantly increasing since Sept. 4, 2015 – at the time only 56 cases were reported.

Around 70 people have already been hospitalized from salmonella poisoning, the CDC said. This outbreak was caused by a salmonella strain called Poona, which infested cucumbers grown in Mexico and distributed by San Diego-based Andrew & Williamson Fresh Produce.
